Decimals of life

When we made our first foray into maths, we counted things, and soon learned that 1+1=2. But a few years later we learned about decimals and rounding, and realized that 1+1 can vary considerably. 0.6 rounds up to 1, but 0.6+0.6=1.2, which is practically 1. Likewise 1.4 rounds down to 1, but 2.8 is almost 3. So 1+1 can be 1, 2 or 3.
What we were probably too young to understand is that life is like that, too. There are many times when we need to make a decision, and that decision needs to be "whole". You cannot be a little bit pregnant for long, as they say. In some jobs you have to either take a day off or work the full day, even if you are only 60% healthy. And so on.
Not only is this true for you, but also for people around you. But often we can't see the decimals, only the final decision. So perhaps you are surprised when someone seems to make a different decision today from yesterday, even though nothing has changed. If you had seen their decimals, you would have understood.
