Ego death, by an eyewitness

This morning in the supermarket I saw again an old Christian friend, of the grandmother generation. As I watched, a man in his 30es or so cut before her in the line, from the end of my line, which was rather long. She watched this with what seemed a slightly amused detachment. Then, when he could not find a carrying bag (because these are on the floor in front of the cash register, which he had run past to cut her off) she picked one up and gave him with a warm smile.
"This", I thought to myself, "is what happens when you stop assuming that others are your enemies. They may walk over you, but you don't notice because you are six feet under." I think that's pretty cool.
(Although my own automatic reaction when people cut in the line is that they need to be eliminated quickly and painlessly for the benefit of the species as a whole... I'm working on my attitude, though. When I remember.)
